About Hazel

Hazel’s Yoga teaching has grown from a love of Yoga, firstly as a teenager & later became vital after developing back pains. She has developed her Yoga professionally with Maarten Vermasse, both Foundation course and the British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma at the City Literary College in Holborn, London. Since moving to Oxford in January 2004 she has built up classes in & around Oxford. She also runs weekend breaks and retreats. Hazel continues to explore and develop her yoga with regular training days and workshops with eminent yoga teachers.

Other Teaching Opportunities

Hazel is pleased to share teaching and meditation with her local peers at the Oxford Yoga Teachers Group. She also teaches as one of many teachers with Robin Lipsey at his monthly workshops, please email for his programme. The next date is 11 June 2011. Each year there are Summer Classes offered in the school vacation with a different teacher each week, Hazel teaches for Wolercote and Witney Summer Schools. It is a great way to try different teachers locally.

BWY South
Since October 2009, Hazel is really pleased to have been voted as County Representative for Oxfordshire, within the British Wheel of Yoga South. Her intention is to encourage more folk to take up yoga, and develop more events for members, while continuing to promote the Wheels high standard of teaching and diverse styles on offer in our area.

Details of the weekend Cotswolds yoga break and weeks yoga in France are detailed on Yoga Holidays page with the Saturday workshops scheduled throughout the year.

Other Experience
Hazel has come from a teaching background, having taught Ceramics within Adult Education and privately for 14 years. She ran her own Ceramics business for 10 years, specialising in hand painted bone china and really enjoyed making pieces for special occasions and one off projects. Life brought changes and she moved into administration and office managing for 6 years. Hazel is now working as Yoga teacher and Reiki healer in the Oxford area.

Handpainted Bone China
2009 has seen Hazel rekindle her creative side with painting English bone china. She began to fire kilns again, after a few intrepid customers had sought her out to paint pieces to replenish their bone-china sets. Hazel has found it is great to be handling colours and brushes again after 10years absence from china painting. Thanks to those that have gently nudged her, especially a friends kindness to upgrade the electric fuses so no longer has to fire in the kitchen. She has designed a range of mugs, tea & dinner sets and decorative pieces. Come and see the new designs or commission something special at the monthly local Appleton Farmers Market but now inside the village hall as the temperature plumets! Added incentive of great cakes and teas/coffees on offer in the hall.

Yoga Teaching
As a teacher I always remind students to “drop your shoulders, breathe and smile”, the theory being to loosen the tension we habitually hold in our shoulders; breathe and smile because if you are grimacing you won’t be breathing; smiling reminds the body and mind to relax and lengthen into the pose rather than strain or push. Breathing smoothly and evenly allows the mind, body and soul to reconnect.

Students comments about Hazel’s teaching In October 2008 I did a feedback form asking all my students in the variety of classes how they found the classes:-

“Benefited from alternative postures… Also your [Hazels’] ability to structure a mixed ability class so that all achieve and all are challenged, without singling out any individuals.” ~ Sharon Green, Botley

“For me as a novice it has been a fantastic experience, I simply can’t get enough and can’t wait for the next course.” Dr Peter Dwyer, Old Headington

“Keeps my back stronger – haven’t had many problems since I started Yoga.” ~ Marilyn, Eynsham

“General calm throughout the week and sometimes I use the breathing exercises to help me sleep.” ~ Lizzy, Old Headington

“A good mix of different poses – enough to be interesting but not enough to be bamboozled! Good to recap over some poses.” Emma, Office held workshops

“It has helped with my posture, I am more supple. I always hear Hazel’s voice when my shoulders are by my ears!” ~ Anna Price, Old Headington

Some earlier comments that describe the classes:

“I enjoy most Hazel’s approach to the class which has the right balance between serious and light hearted” ~ Nicola

“I like the mix of postures, relaxation and the (slow) pace of the class but I still feel I work hard.” ~ unsigned

"Yoga with Hazel has been great. She blends a good mix of routines with relaxation and is very clear and thorough. It's the only exercise class that's made me want to go back for more!" ~ Vicki
